Cave of Petralona

A majestic creation of nature with geological formations of unique beauty was discovered in 1959 and in its interior is hidden a major find for mankind. It is the oldest human relic that has been found so far in Greece, which belongs to an early transitional stage between Homo erectus and archaic Homo sapiens (Anatomically Modern Human), particularly important for the study of the human species evolution and for its presence on the European continent. The cave then was used as shelter of people, and carnivorous animals. Parts of the findings are exposed in Petralona museum.
